I posted to this blog every day. In 2018, I followed the Great English Walk from Chepstow to Berwick-upon-Tweed, raising money for Ucare. Now, for 2020, my challenge is to walk the South West Coast Path from Minehead to Poole, once again for Ucare.

I finished the last part in October 2020 not far from Thame. To resume from there isn't that easy using public transport and, if I walked for a few days, would involve walking alongside the Thames through Reading and I was quite happy to avoid this. Therefore, I got the train to Goring & Streatley with 85 miles or so to walk over five days.</p><p>On leaving the train, I bought a few things at the nearby Tesco and then went in search of the SSW. The first stretch follows the course of the Thames Path National Trail and then leaving it at Moulsford. A short road walk led me to a restricted byway alongside Moulsford Downs and then to the Ridgeway National Trail which I followed for several miles. I had reckoned on camping at Scutchamer Knob, a belt of trees shown on the map. There was a car park there with a couple of vehicles parked but it was fine. I obviously didn't take any photos this first day. It rained on and off.</p><p>Next morning I continued along the Ridgeway for a couple of miles and then taking a track to the left named on the map as Old Street. Reaching the village of Farnborough, I made use of a water tap I spied from the road at Upper Farm. The paths and tracks I walked were all easy and totally deserted with a feeling of remoteness. </p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigI4qKv5qT8H4pDvy9sDH5w1QWzyT2YSOWZpU08u9FXWht4_-aPC8b8jT46u2lh1RJm2570SU7edR0eKaKVAdb5OMfzLOqCYeQK587VM6n_AOlBPtVePST_ywmSq-ARSh4Mio-Zj9I_6sxMeOeEwUuHfi1f8MVMAhaaOYaoMrHx3jD2ElGSNddLla9/s2048/IMG_0871.JPEG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigI4qKv5qT8H4pDvy9sDH5w1QWzyT2YSOWZpU08u9FXWht4_-aPC8b8jT46u2lh1RJm2570SU7edR0eKaKVAdb5OMfzLOqCYeQK587VM6n_AOlBPtVePST_ywmSq-ARSh4Mio-Zj9I_6sxMeOeEwUuHfi1f8MVMAhaaOYaoMrHx3jD2ElGSNddLla9/s320/IMG_0871.JPEG" width="320" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><i>An interesting field and hedge formation</i></td></tr></tbody></table><p>Through Fawley and into real horse country along straight tracks and a long stretch of road beside Eastmanton Down. Leaving the site at Maker Heights, I followed a path out, south east, to rejoin the SWCP at SX440511. I walked for 1.5 hours and arrived at Cremyll ferry just as a boat was coming in. In Plymouth, I walked through the city, stopping in a McDonalds for breakfast and coffee. I then whiled away the morning, making my way to the station. I had a direct train to Cheltenham. There, I found that my train to Worcester had been cancelled. The next train was going to be twenty minutes late which meant that I would miss my next connection. I eventually got home, not allowing myself to get stressed which would have spoilt the holiday feeling.</p><p>About three miles walked to ferry. St Ives to Plymouth - 186 miles.</p><a id="NOjixgyCi3"></a>Litehikerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03138956571978400444noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-274165436127699750.post-35878680017593219662022-09-16T21:12:00.001+01:002022-09-20T22:21:08.348+01:00South West Coast Path Day 14 - 16 September 2022<p class="mobile-photo">A late start - 8.45am. Bay View Farm is a good site. On the site owner, Liz's, recommendation I road walked to Seaton and Downderry. It avoided what she thought were pointless ups and downs parallel with the road. The road was single track in places and very quiet.</p><p class="mobile-photo">Some way beyond Downderry I stopped on the cliff top path and pitched the tarp to dry out. Shortly after continuing Tony came along, having overnighted in Looe. We walked together the next few miles. Another lightweight backpacker, John, stopped to chat. I caught up with him later and we walked together from Polmear to Polkerris, he to take a break and go another route. Shortly after, I met with Tony who I'd come across a couple of times this week. We walked to Fowey. At Gribbin Head, I'd considered camping but it was too windy.</p><p class="mobile-photo">Tony headed for his accommodation in Fowey and I went down to the quay where the Polruan ferry was waiting. On board was Sheila, just two days into a cycle ride from Lands End to John o'Groats. At Polruan, I helped push her panniered bike up the long incline out of the village to the Polruan Holiday Park. I'd ascertained their rate for backpackers was £11 but on arrival they wanted £15 so I declined to stay and walked on a short distance and found a reasonable wild pitch. I got away by 6.45am after the second dog walker was going by. I left Oli still packing up and he was going into Porthleven to buy water.
<br />
<br />I quickly rejoined the coast path. It wasn't raining at that point but much rain was forecast for the day. It was an enjoyable walk along the cliff top and then across Loe Bar. <div><br /><div><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiNt4N1fYTx6wxUiB_vBMdq4ldBrsUW0ltGkla62t5mVr9WIUtVIY61On4a5GZENYZTYYSY6JaCdnFCoQCqYaQ0JgRbALIZy6bHzqdFhQMQ45R5XFQ1T6iPkk-wrrYjYIIt8LVZ6Qvz2iUVCub0TuArnH-MLz-0uJPvM8UVIPjoz0NAu3mNbWmJ8q53" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_7141109441588396626" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiNt4N1fYTx6wxUiB_vBMdq4ldBrsUW0ltGkla62t5mVr9WIUtVIY61On4a5GZENYZTYYSY6JaCdnFCoQCqYaQ0JgRbALIZy6bHzqdFhQMQ45R5XFQ1T6iPkk-wrrYjYIIt8LVZ6Qvz2iUVCub0TuArnH-MLz-0uJPvM8UVIPjoz0NAu3mNbWmJ8q53=s320" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><i>Loe Bar</i></td></tr></tbody></table></div><div><br /></div><div>I paused for a while in the church at Gunwalloe Church Cove to escape the weather for a bit. <br />So, plan made, I walked up to Mullion village in pouring rain, bought a large steak pasty and some saffron buns and then made my way by road to Sea View Camping at Predannack to end a short day's walking. I'm showered and shaved and have been under cover during the several downpours.
<br />
<br />The day has ended strangely with the news this evening of the death of the Queen. I'll always recall where I was when I heard the news - under my tarp at Predannack.

At least as I was in a bivy bag, I was dry and so was my quilt.<br /><br />This morning I set off with various bits of clothing attached to the outside of my pack.</p><p class="mobile-photo">Today's weather was generally warm and sunny at times so the clothing eventually dried. At eleven I stopped to make coffee near Zennor and put the tarp up to dry.</p><p class="mobile-photo"><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiBwp7OPlzGxbBs5IxFe3OfrQTR0Yg-TbRR0TyW5gB-AH8sz0bjvvJgFmrxoYePCeoux371UYXoAy26wy9rV5Ul4q-diLtJZrxS79HFjAga-LpbnipCrvgkf1FrNBvZ8C9Rl2gN9LsoMvkH04jR1vBiooWSipYHG-2AgBqCYWxbaGkrQ85dWa90a4cV" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_7140148843841371490" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiBwp7OPlzGxbBs5IxFe3OfrQTR0Yg-TbRR0TyW5gB-AH8sz0bjvvJgFmrxoYePCeoux371UYXoAy26wy9rV5Ul4q-diLtJZrxS79HFjAga-LpbnipCrvgkf1FrNBvZ8C9Rl2gN9LsoMvkH04jR1vBiooWSipYHG-2AgBqCYWxbaGkrQ85dWa90a4cV=s320" /></a></div><p class="mobile-photo"></p><p></p><p class="mobile-photo"><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjtyVkkdjwqj7iWVSTXG_jz52IyMbxu_Jcz5kwH-63LbrwJmfbZVDmYcWblWzJHnPG_I1MD5BHYuhpyHY2mZCo9qBoWE9-KIgz285ycVs50gqB9HNt1GNfUa5ZGjr6XH25p7TCTAjQulgrMhUQzmo3y7DxmfsqS1vohbQ_ikhaGXC085mCt3v-Fy7NL" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_7140148862563241650" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjtyVkkdjwqj7iWVSTXG_jz52IyMbxu_Jcz5kwH-63LbrwJmfbZVDmYcWblWzJHnPG_I1MD5BHYuhpyHY2mZCo9qBoWE9-KIgz285ycVs50gqB9HNt1GNfUa5ZGjr6XH25p7TCTAjQulgrMhUQzmo3y7DxmfsqS1vohbQ_ikhaGXC085mCt3v-Fy7NL=s320" /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div></a><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjtyVkkdjwqj7iWVSTXG_jz52IyMbxu_Jcz5kwH-63LbrwJmfbZVDmYcWblWzJHnPG_I1MD5BHYuhpyHY2mZCo9qBoWE9-KIgz285ycVs50gqB9HNt1GNfUa5ZGjr6XH25p7TCTAjQulgrMhUQzmo3y7DxmfsqS1vohbQ_ikhaGXC085mCt3v-Fy7NL" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjkj09R8IxNRr3cRIYm29M13tdo8h-jNqX9EfHEA68hgKNFjodczYDq_Cu7n_WrOq97Y3Rv79t5fVqu2fcHSwgaNrDgndpiLO115rihoLpQcdLVDoraLJ6qoqT6aRMp_RmQ88b1zDn4fjew_b9I869Bo9XFGKnNH6D6ErbIKwu_Ioz3EGQqfhbKhN_P" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_7140148853650203618" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjkj09R8IxNRr3cRIYm29M13tdo8h-jNqX9EfHEA68hgKNFjodczYDq_Cu7n_WrOq97Y3Rv79t5fVqu2fcHSwgaNrDgndpiLO115rihoLpQcdLVDoraLJ6qoqT6aRMp_RmQ88b1zDn4fjew_b9I869Bo9XFGKnNH6D6ErbIKwu_Ioz3EGQqfhbKhN_P=s320" /></a></div><p class="mobile-photo"></p></div><p class="mobile-photo"></p><div>During the afternoon I walked for a bit with a lady who lived locally. Got a good price to travel first class and very nice it was too. At St Ives, I picked up water from a drinking water point outside the loos near the front and then didn't hang around, leaving the holidaymakers behind and joining the coast path just past Tate St Ives. It had rained earlier but was quite settled as I was walking. It was 5.30pm as I left. I walked for an hour until I found a good place to camp at Hor Point looking back at St Ives and out to sea. It isn't exhaustive by any means and only covers the Way between Bruern and Henley-on-Thames. There may be other water sources that I didn't see, of course. The sources that are streams or rivers should only be drunk after treating and/or filtering. I was walking the route FROM Henley.</p><p>Pishill church SU726898 - water tap inside gate.</p><p>Pyrton - stream at SU691963.</p><p>Stream - SP689004 steep bank down. May be muddy. Best to lower a container by cord.</p><p>Albury church SP655051- tap inside gate.</p><p>Waterstock - water tap at SP634054.</p><p>Islip - water tap at entrance to allotments. SP529137</p><p>Weston on the Green - water tap on wall of village hall SP531186.</p><p>Charlbury - water taps at rear of Baptist Church (SP356196) and the cemetery (SP355197).</p><p>Garage shop at Shipton-under-Wychwood - SP282182</p><p>Stream at SP334210 - shallow. Slight flow in drought conditions. Probably ok out of drought.</p><p>Stream at SP328207 - decent flow and deep. Will need to lower container with cord.</p><p>River Evenlode at SP301191. Decent flow. Cord required.</p><p>Community shop at Bledington - SP247266. There is a water tap which is probably accessible when the shop is shut.</p><p style="text-align: left;"><br /></p>Litehikerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03138956571978400444noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-274165436127699750.post-53384658019496586992022-08-11T22:08:00.003+01:002022-08-11T22:09:22.325+01:00Oxfordshire Way Day 4 - 9 August 2022<p> A couple of times in the night I awoke to a smell or stench. I don't think it was me. I'm sure it was some animal smell. Could it have been deer? I really don't know.</p><p>I was away by 7am, over the wooden steps straddling the boundary wall of the Estate. Continuing along Akeman Street, here the route was shared with the Wychwood Way, one of my local long distance paths which I've walked before. At Bagg's Bottom, I walked north through Stonesfield and it was easy walking into Charlbury. </p><p style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi45AuRfbsmFEpWoBnkssSDgDlhrpS1C4WZBMCCZXnCtHX1fv2nYhoGg5zlmbEeeZwkYFdNPLFwR9pUbfEuGGp0TAMQ148ZuM4lH1grgItPi0jXF7hWDjX9F5rToqn-la0F9jgAPNC5aJsOUxQGDXCf2BFMGOZ67RIDODlBcblrnDzPjtr5GZ6xVlIB/s2048/IMG_0516.JPEG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi45AuRfbsmFEpWoBnkssSDgDlhrpS1C4WZBMCCZXnCtHX1fv2nYhoGg5zlmbEeeZwkYFdNPLFwR9pUbfEuGGp0TAMQ148ZuM4lH1grgItPi0jXF7hWDjX9F5rToqn-la0F9jgAPNC5aJsOUxQGDXCf2BFMGOZ67RIDODlBcblrnDzPjtr5GZ6xVlIB/s320/IMG_0516.JPEG" width="320" /></a></p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifpJjny3jctQLmBYcW2iTOM0dhwSXI-Cs5NL6MvONucyPhw0Cvec9bGUHlmmNAVzj_CNmvGlY54yOj5LhrjEOMY_R3bVXNvq_kwKj1GbhmKlBUC4VVzc5tNp_QxisIUFs6SwDp2KTyokBpg--27b70eC_fiePrARwbobT_6P2oYH6UIJ4Sfe9HzrzQ/s2048/IMG_0517.JPEG" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifpJjny3jctQLmBYcW2iTOM0dhwSXI-Cs5NL6MvONucyPhw0Cvec9bGUHlmmNAVzj_CNmvGlY54yOj5LhrjEOMY_R3bVXNvq_kwKj1GbhmKlBUC4VVzc5tNp_QxisIUFs6SwDp2KTyokBpg--27b70eC_fiePrARwbobT_6P2oYH6UIJ4Sfe9HzrzQ/s320/IMG_0517.JPEG" width="320" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><i>Bagg's Bottom</i></td></tr></tbody></table><p style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOhmDgg-DQJ9mjoG3X5rSsXCWNI653vB4PnBmLi9Adp4oTHi8sNg2VOXrmZp5oCXqUzWPPxZEi_-0ZP19xaWlUEPdAtE_ne0xCDFi3RKxytPZJddn60itq0VQVmvmcKbYghtYE6EXaFTd00QPD7535rlhk2Zz30ojGcu_I-Gv5C3FYX3vlXKms-_nO/s2048/IMG_0518.JPEG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOhmDgg-DQJ9mjoG3X5rSsXCWNI653vB4PnBmLi9Adp4oTHi8sNg2VOXrmZp5oCXqUzWPPxZEi_-0ZP19xaWlUEPdAtE_ne0xCDFi3RKxytPZJddn60itq0VQVmvmcKbYghtYE6EXaFTd00QPD7535rlhk2Zz30ojGcu_I-Gv5C3FYX3vlXKms-_nO/s320/IMG_0518.JPEG" width="320" /></a></p><p>I knew of a Londis store here where I planned to buy water but it was slightly out of my way. I happened to have the Refill app on my phone and found there are two places in Charlbury who will fill water bottles. One was the Rose & Crown pub which was closed at the time I was to pass by. The other was the Charlbury Deli & Cafe which was open. It's a lovely place and they gave me water. Also, it would have been rude not have a coffee and a slice of apricot and almond frangipane - really delicious. A very friendly place and to be recommended.</p><p>Leaving Charlbury, I started to walk along Water Lane, a restricted byway, but after a short distance, I could see that it was wet and muddy and impassable (surprising given the lack of rain but perhaps the name gave it away) so I climbed over a gate to rejoin the Oxfordshire Way. Around Dean Grove, I was really on home territory. Easy walking then to Ascott-under-Wychwood and on to Shipton-under-Wychwood. I finished my walk at Bruern, having walked 13 miles.</p>Litehikerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03138956571978400444noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-274165436127699750.post-25914336757797880962022-08-11T21:45:00.003+01:002022-08-11T22:10:55.801+01:00Oxfordshire Way Day 3 - 8 August 2022<p>Some deer passed me by last evening only about fifty feet away. They very quickly caught my scent and were off.</p><p>I was away by 6.30am. A large herd of young cows were in the very big field I was in. Whenever I got anywhere near them, they would run on, so no problem. When I left the field, they crowded round the gate. The paths were very clear and took me through the village of Beckley. Here, I saw a lady tending the expansive garden of a large house. I needed water so I went in. I was shown to a tap in a utility room and also offered coffee but she had family visiting so I politely declined but she was very kind. Still, I had four litres on board so was sorted for the next night.</p><p>At Noke, I stopped to brew coffee in the churchyard.</p><p>At Islip I came towards The Swan Inn and thought a lime and soda might be nice. However, it was being refurbished. There was a sign up saying they would reopen when they are ready. I can't find any account online by anyone who has backpacked and wild camped it. Such accounts as there are have been a succession of day walks but that's not my way.
<br />
<br />The Oxfordshire Way officially starts at Bourton on the Water (which is actually in Gloucestershire) and goes for 67 miles to Henley on Thames. I've chosen to start in Henley and walk about 60 miles along the Way and then leave it to walk the few miles home.
<br />
<br />I've packed waterproofs but no rain is expected. The weather is forecast to be very warm.
<br />
<br />I bought some lunch in Henley and four litres of water, most of which is around my waist in an Ortlieb water bag. I wouldn't want that weight on my back and, as it's been so dry, I'm not expecting many natural water sources.<div><br /><div><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrdQ6NJTiUE5PIPqjUdvud8jb4JSN0NXdSgJsF3Wn8eQAJiRa5RhifJuGVfUBHHmedB5ELv2npygQ6db2zlZU_XVIS5jyMKoqAqGSbYTx7w8s23nL0Xl9kUMVzv4HldzCpvXRnzyx1m_RjI4JC5VqH-6_Q4wvHhhHZJex8GTJKJEZqpyRUcIc03kJx/s2048/IMG_0497.JPEG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrdQ6NJTiUE5PIPqjUdvud8jb4JSN0NXdSgJsF3Wn8eQAJiRa5RhifJuGVfUBHHmedB5ELv2npygQ6db2zlZU_XVIS5jyMKoqAqGSbYTx7w8s23nL0Xl9kUMVzv4HldzCpvXRnzyx1m_RjI4JC5VqH-6_Q4wvHhhHZJex8GTJKJEZqpyRUcIc03kJx/s320/IMG_0497.JPEG" width="320" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><i>The path out of Henley</i></td></tr></tbody></table><br /></div><div> <br />The Way is easy to find out of Henley and follows a mix of field paths and quiet lanes. I passed through Warburg nature reserve where I've camped with The Backpackers Club (with permission) a few times. There, and beyond, much of the walking was through woodland which gave relief from the heat.
<br />
<br /></div><div><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh288eRAKoe6We8rceXut4bFzPZbZUQiDY-DALasSYVMHdgMVRcfMsT6sBXLqFcEk2zPGjJBCGg1peur72PPbpd75LlCPXs0WMwDubC352pI2K4wHbIG2Xk9HSwHHKcvLkmi3UbdJucVBUzDI3YHuHnvPLp02-RhzMbgnI8cBxdYj9ZmjvJkvqj-WFa/s2048/IMG_0499.JPEG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh288eRAKoe6We8rceXut4bFzPZbZUQiDY-DALasSYVMHdgMVRcfMsT6sBXLqFcEk2zPGjJBCGg1peur72PPbpd75LlCPXs0WMwDubC352pI2K4wHbIG2Xk9HSwHHKcvLkmi3UbdJucVBUzDI3YHuHnvPLp02-RhzMbgnI8cBxdYj9ZmjvJkvqj-WFa/s320/IMG_0499.JPEG" width="320" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><i>Warburg</i></td></tr></tbody></table></div><div><br /></div><div>I'd planned to walk about ten miles (as I'd started walking at lunchtime) and found a fine place to sleep in the extensive woodland just short of Christmas Common. As there was to be no rain, I cowboy camped. There seemed no point in pitching a tarp.

<br />I heard a couple of loud noises this morning whilst under the tarp. I thought a bird had collided with it but when starting to take the tarp down it appeared that one or more birds might have taken exception to me being under their tree. There was a lot of it but I was able to scrape it off and then wipe down with a wet cloth.<div><br /></div><div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgiIXQosbXq4lougwX_1uo0g0kEkgS_WrGG61SelDBkuTr9otLVRyb2Lp5BiQ3cey8R9Xckx3Fqgsn0qSqdBnMnBbL5VHoo-S9Fr4leKS5CVu4CYVSUICc3x-T28C9mu5ORoWRwTbwbTvEsSJLjpcHJzGxtgkkb8PjLmVZNRT3MCoYRcqC-dYyFS-5s" style="text-align: left;"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_7101371323371737810" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgiIXQosbXq4lougwX_1uo0g0kEkgS_WrGG61SelDBkuTr9otLVRyb2Lp5BiQ3cey8R9Xckx3Fqgsn0qSqdBnMnBbL5VHoo-S9Fr4leKS5CVu4CYVSUICc3x-T28C9mu5ORoWRwTbwbTvEsSJLjpcHJzGxtgkkb8PjLmVZNRT3MCoYRcqC-dYyFS-5s=s320" /></a> </div>
<br />The woodland I had planned to camp in would have been fine; also around an electricity substation immediately before it. However, the exit of the path on to the road was totally blocked by a fallen tree but it would have been possible to exit just before the gate.</div><div><br /></div><div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhmn-eEJydLO9CQfj5WGrv3lqJdA2Y2j1MIqTDeDw9gRMki2A9l_w-THh4ziDiDDtwRsbZDbN4noCbsIuknNSNkInnLuIgsd3G256Q1eJqBd27QndnI9XQC6KzGBKL8qcKJ0Uvgs4ZdPrTuYtzFnowhahfM-VGoGjcX3u9hLmKdDUTsXXXiFlpCURea" style="text-align: left;"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_7101371340336157090" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhmn-eEJydLO9CQfj5WGrv3lqJdA2Y2j1MIqTDeDw9gRMki2A9l_w-THh4ziDiDDtwRsbZDbN4noCbsIuknNSNkInnLuIgsd3G256Q1eJqBd27QndnI9XQC6KzGBKL8qcKJ0Uvgs4ZdPrTuYtzFnowhahfM-VGoGjcX3u9hLmKdDUTsXXXiFlpCURea=s320" /></a> </div>
<br />I road walked all the way into Brechin. There wasn't much traffic. I shopped for breakfast and lunch at the large Co-op.
<br />
<br />All was well with my planned route until I reached a farm shown on the map as Caldcots. Here, I asked a lady walking dogs about my route as there were a couple of stretches with no right of way on the map. She wasn't sure but just then the farmer came along and I asked him. He said my route wasn't on rights of way but kindly gave me directions with advice to keep clear of cattle in a couple of places. Looking at my map, he pointed out a stretch further on where he wasn't sure there was a right of way. Sure enough, there wasn't. I went down a farm track marked private which, after a while, led to a grass track along a field margin (although shown as a white lane on the map). After this, I just trespassed along the route I wanted to go. There was no path at all and at one point I went through a hedge backwards to emerge on to a vehicle track.

<br />A very overcast morning but not cold. I walked down past the Glen Doll car park; just one campervan their presumably having spent the night. A lovely location. <br />
<br />It was then a long, slow ascent to Loch Brandy but half way up found I had a 4G signal so made my last check in call to Challenge Control. I also phoned home. Shortly after, Paul from yesterday came up behind me. He and a couple of other Challengers had overnighted at the Glen Clova Hotel. He was following the same route as me today so we walked together. Up on the tops the mist was swirling and there was quite a wind. With his navigational gadget, a Garmin Fenix (I think), we got across some pretty featureless terrain. It was pretty boggy with stretches of black peat. His navigation brought us precisely to the landrover track which led us down to Shielin of Saughs bothy. This was to have been my planned overnight stop but it was far too early. Here, we took shelter from the wind although the mist had totally cleared. I made coffee and he went on to find a wild pitch as the day for both of us was to end in Glen Lethnot which we were about to enter. I stayed and my coffee stop morphed into lunch.<div><br /></div><div><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjNzcIuGy2js17XReYZMHL6yqOBnW0F03yi19C4Gv6ka07oFXkC45vF-5uW25ICEPvfC2Rx0mEQjQ-sC3MJBlLDP9uKi3elLAXCs-I9Tve9tJjy7OOfOOvuTwcMDbi_VRoV-fOVNigw4expr9FO4ySZ3nnrDPPj0jl3iGCPnaZCT8feGZlV2OtjXYHf" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: left;"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_7100907993054398818" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjNzcIuGy2js17XReYZMHL6yqOBnW0F03yi19C4Gv6ka07oFXkC45vF-5uW25ICEPvfC2Rx0mEQjQ-sC3MJBlLDP9uKi3elLAXCs-I9Tve9tJjy7OOfOOvuTwcMDbi_VRoV-fOVNigw4expr9FO4ySZ3nnrDPPj0jl3iGCPnaZCT8feGZlV2OtjXYHf=s320" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><i>Walking down to Shielin of Saughs bothy</i></td></tr></tbody></table><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div>Glen Lethnot was quite lovely and the route followed a landrover track all the way until a marked footpath snaked down to the river. The path was indistinct on the approach to Knaps of Fafernie and boggy. About here I met another Challenger, Paul, and we walked together on and off for about three miles although he was faster than me and I later lost him (or he me).
<br />
<br />My original route was through Glen Doll but Storm Arwen some months ago caused extensive damage to the forest there and we were advised to divert via Glittering Skellies and Bachnagairn. This route was good at first but then became boggy above Loch Esk. It came on to rain, was windy so I didn't stop for lunch. The descent to Bachnagairn was lovely as the glen to the east came into view.</div><div><br /></div><div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDBAHCg6EQM1XSnqCEuzd2YYCwY_T_zsg_PZKrw1BOCOQRMRDQ4BqxZBThD_Bt0XkY8lMedkZSqbEiWcAv3ze4fKwxpWSWClXv_UddS4sCUPBQeFlxIYErW9Pw7OcIP40zFo2C-eG27MCEWjbjjXR0dCXp8RB9OToVmVOs661fuHkAKORH4n0xgHCN/s2048/IMG_0399.JPEG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDBAHCg6EQM1XSnqCEuzd2YYCwY_T_zsg_PZKrw1BOCOQRMRDQ4BqxZBThD_Bt0XkY8lMedkZSqbEiWcAv3ze4fKwxpWSWClXv_UddS4sCUPBQeFlxIYErW9Pw7OcIP40zFo2C-eG27MCEWjbjjXR0dCXp8RB9OToVmVOs661fuHkAKORH4n0xgHCN/s320/IMG_0399.JPEG" width="320" /></a> </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPQf1GsLktBKygVjt2u768X50SnoWs_lDf1Ui6LXPFvExzHnlrCik7fdtdW8hdBHLxUwKMQdSYzJC6KLf_PuhbJ6C8W9ZMu0YosuNk5DC5B2ihjH9rVrbGGDPWTzO42q-m0iPU1h0xcsEm-HD2gETNfiCvWWu1W3p4DdpHf4yvudRC8SDZQXtgxX1o/s2048/IMG_0400.JPEG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPQf1GsLktBKygVjt2u768X50SnoWs_lDf1Ui6LXPFvExzHnlrCik7fdtdW8hdBHLxUwKMQdSYzJC6KLf_PuhbJ6C8W9ZMu0YosuNk5DC5B2ihjH9rVrbGGDPWTzO42q-m0iPU1h0xcsEm-HD2gETNfiCvWWu1W3p4DdpHf4yvudRC8SDZQXtgxX1o/s320/IMG_0400.JPEG" width="320" /></a></div>
